Sawyer leads Ellsworth past Bucksport for title

BUCKSPORT – Thomas Sawyer struck out 10 and hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to give Ellsworth the come-from-behind win over Bucksport to claim the District 1, ages 9-10 championship.

Tucker Lewis had two doubles for Ellsworth and Kyle Haslam hit a two-run single.

Andrew Giosia tripled and singled for Bucksport and Billy Deredin had a two-run single in the fourth inning.

South Portland 13, Waldoboro 6

At Thomaston, Olivia Ledue hit two singles and allowed only four hits while striking out eight to push South Portland past Waldoboro.

Paizley Mitchell singled twice for South Portland.

Desiree Benner, Kathryn Pinkham, Elizabeth Delano and Dezarea McPhee singled for Waldoboro.

Auburn 11, Biddeford 1

At Thomaston, Amanda Turcotte hit a two-run double and a single to lead Auburn to victory.

Kayla Nedeau allowed just one run on two hits and two walks while fanning four for Auburn. Emily Grund singled twice and Kristen Whittaker had a double.

Jenna Roy and Sarah Gillblair each singled for Biddeford. Keila Grigware struck out eight.

District 3 Baseball, 15-16

Bangor 10, Old Town-Orono 9

At Mansfield Stadium in Bangor on Monday, Tyson Barron’s two-run double and Ben Silver’s two-run single, both in the fifth inning, helped the Bangor Senior League all-star team beat Old Town-Orono/Veazie for the District 3 championship and a berth in the Senior League World Series.

Bangor earned the World Series spot as the winner of host District 3. The World Series starts Aug. 15 in Bangor.

Old Town scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh and eventually loaded the bases with two outs. But Alex Gallant came in and induced a groundout to end the game.

Barron finished with two doubles and four RBIs. Gallant singled twice with two RBIs. Ryan Jones had a single, a double and an RBI while Kyle Leeman added an RBI double.

Jon Brothers paced Old Town-Orono with three RBIs on two doubles and a single. David Chillelli singled with two RBIs.
