THOMASTON – A speeding driver who plowed a stolen truck into a tree Sunday morning fled on foot and has not been apprehended, police said Tuesday.

Police Chief Kevin Haj reported that Officer Michael Blais spotted a large pickup truck shortly after midnight Sunday traveling at more than 40 mph near the former Maine State Prison property on Route 1, where the speed limit is 35 mph.

As the truck approached, the town mall, where the speed limit is 30 mph, Blais still had the vehicle locked into radar at the same 40-plus mph speed when it crashed into a tree.

The driver bolted from the vehicle and eluded the officer.

The pickup, owned by Sawyer Brothers concrete company, had been parked at Stubby’s auto service garage, Haj said. The vehicle had extensive front-end damage, he said.
