A better biscuit

After reading last Wednesday’s biscuit article in the Bangor Daily News, Dottie Littlefield wrote in to share her secret ingredient. She uses the Bakewell Cream recipe (found in last week’s paper or on the back of the Bakewell Cream can), but she substitutes SACO Cultured Buttermilk Blend in place of plain milk. She mixes 7 tablespoons with 13/4 cups cold water and prepares the recipe as directed. “They come out nice – high and light,” Littlefield writes.

Rice is nice

Code Blue

It’s what berry lovers have been waiting for all summer: the arrival of wild Maine blueberries. In addition to being delicious, wild blueberries have been shown to inhibit the initiation and promotion of stages of cancer, reverse short-term memory loss, improve motor skills, protect against heart disease, prevent urinary tract infection, and improve night vision. You get a jump-start on the season by visiting Peaked Mountain Blueberries’ Open Farm Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25. The farm sells wild blueberries for pickup or you can pick your own. The farm is located at 16 Ellery’s Lane in Dedham. For information, visit www.mainemade.com or www.getrealmaine.com, or call 843-6484.
