After reading Robert Roper’s letter, “Won’t be choosing Bush” (BDN, July 16), I felt that a few things needed to be straightened out. All three reasons to not vote for the president were flawed and need to be corrected.
The recently released Senate intelligence states that U.S. ambassador Joseph Wilson actually helped move along the idea that Iraq was attempting to buy yellowcake uranium. This hasn’t got any air time but it is noticeable how quiet the Democrats have been about this subject since the report came out. The president didn’t lie, he went with the information he was give.
Bush will not reinstate a military draft. The idea of a draft was put forward by Reps. Dangel and Conyers, both Democrats, to get more of the upper- and middle-class kids in the war and not just lower-class kids. Most of Iraq is peaceful, save for the Sunni triangle (Saddams home area), and each day more Iraqis are joining the military and police force. Soon we will see our kids coming home.
The Geneva Conventions only applies to uniformed soldiers of armies, not terrorists. The president did not turn a blind eye to them and anyone that has abused a prisoner is being dealt with through the military court system.
I think any one of the captured people who have been beheaded would gladly switch places with someone who had a dog bark at them. We have found Sarin in shells and the Polish army found 17 shells with WMD, so it seems Saddam did have them. If someone doesn’t want to vote for the president, then don’t. But don’t make up a bunch of lies to try to help convince other people.
