BANGOR – Even with two key players out of Bangor’s lineup, it continues to put the “lumber” in Lumberjacks.
Monday saw the Lumberjacks amass 14 hits to back another solid outing by starting pitcher Matt Scheuing en route to a 12-4 drubbing of the New Haven County Cutters on a clear, warm night at Winkin Complex.
Bangor, now 6-2 in second- half play, has won nine of its last 11 games in spite of an injury to leading home run hitter Derry Hammond, who did not play Monday, and the loss of Jake Whitesides, who was acquired by the Chicago White Sox organization.
The offensive production flowed from the top of the order on down as catcher and No. 2 hitter Brad Hargreaves went 3-for-3 with five runs scored – just one off the league record – two walks, and a stolen base.
“Sweeping Brockton and then beating New Haven gave us a lot of confidence,” said Hargreaves, who admitted he’s made several adjustments at the plate and is paying more attention to his offensive production, which has noticeably improved this year.
“Beating Brockton there was huge and now we have to keep it going,” Hargreaves added.
No. 3 hitter Donnie Ross had a double, two singles and an RBI.
“When the lineup’s working like we are right now, everybody’s going to see good pitches if someone’s on base,” said Ross. “Confidence is a huge thing for us right now and our pitching and hitting really complement each other.”
Seven different Bangor hitters had at least one RBI – more than enough production for Scheuing.
“I don’t know if it was the little extra time off, but I just felt really comfortable throwing today and felt like I was in the zone,” said Scheuing, now 6-2. “Everything was clicking today on all cylinders.”
Scheuing got a gorilla off his back in the process of throwing seven innings of four-hit, two-run ball as he finally beat the team that tagged him for his only two losses.
“I lost to him (Jordy Alexander) here the last time we played them here at home and this really keeps our momentum going too,” said Scheuing, who struck out three batters and walked none.
Bangor broke on top early with two runs in the first inning on a one-out single by Hargreaves, an RBI double by Ross, and an RBI single to right by Mark Burke.
The Lumberjacks broke it open in the third with four runs on four hits, an error, and a passed ball. Things really got out of hand for New Haven in the fourth when the Lumberjacks took advantage of five walks – all by reliever Chris Keelin – and two hits, both RBI singles by Shin Uchino and Rolando Bello.
Bangor made it 11-0 in the fifth with a leadoff walk to Hargreaves, two groundouts, and an RBI single to right center by Kazuhiro Kohno.
The 2-6 Cutters finally ended their drought in the sixth as Ryan Kane led off with his fifth home run of the season – a 405-foot shot to dead center. They added another run in the inning via a Jose Matteo single, a Gavin Fingleson single, a wild pitch, and a Hector LeBron sacrifice fly.
Bangor got one of the runs back in the seventh on back-to-back singles by Hargreaves and Ross, and a one-out double into the right-field corner by Kohno.
New Haven scratched for two more runs in the ninth on back-to-back, one-out doubles by Hector LeBron and Darren Ciraco and back-to-back, two-out singles by Kevin Forbes and Nick Hiter.
