Andrews, bullpen key Bangor win Garcia spearheads attack

BANGOR – There would be no offensive outburst like the previous night, but the end result on a warm, humid Tuesday night at Winkin Complex would be the same.

Clayton Andrews outdueled Lumberjack killer Tony Harden (two one-hitters vs. Bangor the last two years) and his bullpen executed an escape that would have made Houdini proud as Bangor downed the New Haven County Cutters 3-1.

“We’re playing right now like a ballclub that’s on a mission. People pick each other up, like has happened with great teams I’ve been part of in the past,” said Bangor manager Kash Beauchamp.

The Lumberjacks are 7-2 in second half play with their 10th win in the last 12 games and own the second-best overall record (first and second half) in the Northeast League at 32-23. New Haven slips to 2-7.

Andrews (5-2) turned in his third straight solid start after suffering through some inconsistent outings by scattering five hits over seven innings while racking up six strikeouts and walking just one batter.

“Clayton told me after one of his rough outings, ‘Hey, hang with me man. I’m gonna get this stuff right’ and we have and that was a great outing by him tonight,” Beauchamp said. “He could definitely be a difference-maker for us from here on out.”

Converted starter Lance Calmus notched his fourth save despite giving up a double in the ninth. He stranded the runner at second with two strikeouts and an infield popup.

“I’ve done it before and I like it, so it feels good to get back out there,” Calmus said. “I’m a totally different pitcher now than I was before. Now I just rear back, let it go, and basically try to strike them out.”

Jose Garcia led Bangor offensively with a double, two singles and two runs scored in four at-bats.

“I’ve been working on staying back more and letting the pitch get there,” Garcia said, explaining the improved production which has moved him into the leadoff spot. “I’m more open now, which lets me compact my swing more.”

Just like they did Monday night, the Lumberjacks scored first with two runs, this time in the third inning. Three straight singles by Garcia, Brad Hargreaves and Donnie Ross scored Garcia, and Hargreaves scored on a Mark Burke sacrifice fly to center.

New Haven cut its deficit in half in the fourth on Darren Ciraco’s leadoff home run – a 360-foot shot to left center – but Bangor got the run back in the fifth on Garcia’s leadoff double to right center, a groundout, and a wild pitch.

Bangor escaped a big jam in the eighth inning, when reliever John Boker came in and walked the first two batters.

Beauchamp lifted Boker and replaced him with J.C. Huguet, who walked his first batter to load the bases. Huguet ran the count to 1-2 on No. 3 batter Hector LeBron before getting Bangor’s biggest break of the game. LeBron broke his bat on the next pitch and sent a soft liner to Huguet, who made the catch and then caught Jose Mateo off first for a double play. Huguet intentionally walked the next batter – Ciraco – and then struck out Adam Shorsher on four pitches, the last of which was a high fastball that Shorsher couldn’t lay off.
