Top-seeded Bangor and runner-up Brewer dominated the 2004 American Legion All-Zone 1 baseball team selected by the league’s coaches Tuesday evening.
Bangor, which defeated Brewer in a one-game playoff Sunday to earn the No. 1 seed for the zone tournament that begins Thursday at Mansfield Stadium in Bangor, placed five players on the first team, including Zone 1 pitcher of the year Anthony DeRosa. In addition, Bangor’s Jay Kemble was named coach of the year for guiding the Comrades to a 20-3 record.
Brewer had four players named to the first team, while third-seeded Trenton had two first-team honorees, including Zone 1 player of the year Mark Clapp.
Calais, Hampden, Orono, and Waldo each had one first-team selection.
DeRosa, a righthander who will be a senior at Bangor High School in the fall, compiled a 5-0 record with a 1.85 earned run average, striking out 49 batters while allowing just 26 hits in 39 innings.
Other first-team choices from Bangor were pitcher Phil Cayford (4-0, 2.25 ERA), third baseman Brian Hackett (.342, 25 runs, 24 RBIs, 13 doubles), outfielder Nate Hall (.313, 26 runs, 15 RBIs, 18 for 18 in stolen bases), and second baseman Nick Larochelle (.387, 24 runs, 16 RBIs, 12 stolen bases).
Brewer’s first-team representatives were pitcher Andrew Patterson (5-1, 2.68 ERA), first baseman Pat Moran (.508, two home runs, 22 RBIs and 24 runs), outfielder Jeff Miller (.352, 28 runs), and utility player Kevin McAvoy (.471, six home runs, 28 RBIs).
Clapp, a 2003 George Stevens of Blue Hill graduate, earned player of the year honors by batting a zone-best .552 for Trenton with 36 runs scored, 18 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases. Of his 37 hits, 14 went for extra bases, with nine doubles, four triples, and one home run as he helped the Acadians finish with a 15-7 regular-season record.
Also named to the first team from Trenton was designated hitter Arshwin Asjes, who batted .481 with 17 RBIs.
Other first-teamers were catcher Dusty Thomas of Orono, who batted .365 with a zone-high 10 home runs and an .873 slugging percentage; shortstop Nick Arthers of Waldo, who batted .469 with 20 runs scored and 17 stolen bases; outfielder Steve Colbeth of Calais, who hit .423 with six homers, 26 RBIs, and 20 runs scored; and pitcher Chris Pease of Hampden, who was 5-2 with a 1.71 ERA in 42 innings.
Lincoln had four players named to the second team: pitcher Jeremy Ham (4-3, 3.20 ERA), shortstop Nate Cousineau (.385, 13 RBI, 10 doubles), outfielder Matt Wark (.321), and utility player Tom Lasko (.344, three home runs, 16 runs scored).
Other second-team choices were pitchers Josh Young of Bangor (2-1, 2.73 ERA), Dan Hilts of Trenton (3-1, one save, 2.42 ERA), Jason Weymouth of Penquis (4-1, 2.33 ERA, 42 strikeouts in 30 innings) and Chad Lavway of Presque Isle (2-2, 2.75 ERA); catcher Harrison Hines of Trenton (.254); first baseman Collin Henry of Trenton (.306, two home runs, 26 RBIs, 26 runs); second baseman Zac Bouzan-Kaloustian (.410, 23 runs); third baseman Ian Lee of Hampden (.387, 13 doubles, 18 RBIs); outfielders Brad Goody of Orono (.354, 20 RBI), Scott Macdonald of Calais (.340, 16 RBIs, 17 runs), and Eric Libby of Hampden (.333, 10 stolen bases); designated hitter Andrew Otis of Brewer (.405, two home runs, 15 RBIs); and utility player Eric Day of Penquis (.410, two home runs, 24 RBIs, 23 runs).
