Electrical failure starts ‘fireball’ in mill

ENFIELD – Electrical failure sparked a “fireball” in the sawmill of Cold Stream Lumber Co. on Tuesday morning, causing $5,000 to $10,000 in damage and the temporary shutdown of the business.

Nobody was hurt in the fire, which caused electrical damage but did not damage the building itself, according to Fire Chief Phil Dawson Jr.

A high-voltage electrical panel in the mill’s mechanical room exploded at about 6:30 a.m., causing an electrical fire that looked to the crew on duty like a big “fireball,” Dawson said Tuesday evening.

“There’s a ton of power right there,” Dawson said of the panel that exploded. It held at least 440 volts of electricity, he said.

When Enfield firefighters, assisted by the Lincoln Fire Department, arrived at the mill, most of the flames had been extinguished by Cold Stream employees, Dawson said.

“They did pretty well; we just had a bunch of little stuff to chase down,” he said.

It took the fire departments about an hour and a half to kill all the “crawlers,” which are flames that chase down dusty corners in buildings like the sawmill, Dawson said.
