Border agents detain 2 at stop in Old Town

OLD TOWN – The U.S. Border Patrol held another checkpoint Wednesday at the Old Town weigh station near mile marker 200 on Interstate 95.

Monty Bennett, assistant chief patrol agent, said his office was doing its normal immigration stops and drug enforcement checks.

Traffic was slowed on I-95, though neither state police nor Old Town police said they had any complaints about traffic.

Another checkpoint was held Sunday evening at the same location. Officers detained two people on Sunday who were “not legally supposed to be in the country,” Bennett said.

Bennett also said Sunday’s checkpoint produced a few small drug seizures and other minor offenses. He did not know how long officers would be checking people on Wednesday.

The Maine State Police assisted with Wednesday’s checkpoints. Bennett said the office will be setting up similar checkpoints periodically as the summer progresses in hopes of catching illegal immigrants or people whose visas have run out.
