Karate school

Eastern Maine Karate has recently opened in Brewer with the head school located at 153 State St.

The school teaches a very traditional form of karate-do known as Okinawa Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito, a 300-year-old system of practical self-defense using punching, kicking, grappling and throwing combined with pressure point and joint manipulation. The school studies under the white cane.

Sensei Steve Apsega is the head instructor, with third degree black belt training for 16 years. He has been teaching for several years with schools in Hermon and Orrington. Apsega is a certified member of the Okinawa Karate and Kobudo Federation and receives a visit from the grand master from Okinawa to train in New England every year.

Ground breaking

BANGOR – Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. broke ground last week for its new corporate facility on Telcom Drive. On hand were city officials and Bangor Hydro employees, including chief operating officer Ray Robinson. The building will be used primarily for office space.

Bangor Hydro will lease the facility from Stillwater Telcom, which will own and operate the facility.

The construction is an effort to consolidate Bangor Hydro’s three corporate facilities under one roof. Construction is expected to be completed by early next year.
