BOSTON – University of Maine senior swimmer Jacob Jentzer of Bangor has been named the 2003-04 America East men’s scholar-athlete of the year, the league announced Wednesday.

Jentzer, the first Maine student-athlete to earn the award since its inception in 1996-97, graduated in May with a 3.99 grade-point average after majoring in biochemistry and psychology with a minor in premedical studies. He will attend University of Rochester Medical School t his fall.

Jentzer won the 100 freestyle at the 2002 America East Swimming and Diving Championships. He also recorded three second-place finishes, a fourth and a fifth at the conference championships during his four-year career.

Jentzer was also a second-team Academic All-American in 2002-03.

Tennis player Lana Khvalina of the University of Maryland Baltimore County was named the America East women’s scholar athlete of the year.
