Bangor, Brewer cruise Penquis wins day’s 3rd game

BANGOR – Bangor and Brewer flexed their offensive muscles during Day 1 of the American Legion Zone 1 baseball tournament, each piling up 18 runs in victories halted after 61/2 innings by the 10-run rule.

Top-seeded Bangor opened the double-elimination event Thursday at Mansfield Stadium by overwhelming No. 6 Lincoln 18-1. Second-ranked Brewer followed with an 18-7 victory over No. 5 Calais, and No. 4 Penquis defeated No. 3 Trenton 13-8 in the night game.

Calais will face Lincoln in a noon elimination game to open today’s tripleheader at Mansfield Stadium. Bangor will play Trenton at 4 p.m., while Brewer will meet Penquis at 8 p.m.

Brewer (20-4) pounded out 16 hits and capitalized on six Calais errors to earn its victory, with the Falcons scoring 12 unearned runs.

“We hit the ball well, we base-ran very well, and we capitalized on some of their mistakes,” said Brewer coach David Morris. “Calais is a good-hitting team, so when a team makes some mistakes, you need to take advantage.”

Joe Robicheau led Brewer with a double, three singles and four RBIs. Jeff Miller and Kevin Kotredes each added three singles, while Pat Moran doubled and singled and Andrew Patterson singled twice.

All nine Brewer starters drove had at least one RBI.

“In the past three games our bats have been dead, so we had a good [batting practice] before we came over here,” said Miller. “We saw the pitches well, hit the ball hard, made their defense have to make the plays and it happened to work out in our favor.”

Calais got a big performance from center fielder Scott Macdonald, who had a double and three singles, scored three runs and ranged toward left-center to make a brilliant diving catch that started a double play in the fifth inning.

James Ramsdell added a double and single for the Suns, while Cory Colbeth singled twice.

Calais (12-11) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI singles by brothers Steve and Corey Colbeth.

But Moran doubled and scored on a Robicheau single in the bottom of the inning, and Brewer then scored five runs on three hits and three Calais errors in the second to take a 6-2 lead.

Calais countered with three runs in the top of the third to pull within 6-5, but Brewer then sent 10 batters to the plate for the second straight inning in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on six hits to extend its lead to 12-5.

“Our guys are pretty resilient,” said Morris. “We were down 2-0, and I think that really sparked some fire in us. We’re a young group in a lot of ways, but being down 2-0 sparked us and we came out and hit the ball hard.”

Calais pulled within 12-6 with a run in the fifth, and then loaded the bases with no one out in the sixth. But left-hander Jim Nicknair, on in relief of Brewer starter Corey Cushing, escaped the jam while giving up just one run, and Brewer put the game away with a six-run rally in the bottom of the inning.

“That’s the biggest win of the playoffs, to get the first one,” Miller said. “After the first one you go from there, but if you don’t get the first one you’ve dug yourself a pretty deep hole.”

Earlier on Thursday, Bangor amassed 20 hits and took control with a 10-run third inning.

Lincoln grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Matt Leino walked and later scored on a two-out single by Jason Murchison.

But Bangor scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, and then sent 16 batters to the plate in the third, capitalizing on 10 hits and four Lincoln errors to score 10 runs for a 13-1 lead.

Phil Cayford paced Bangor with two doubles, two singles, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Josh Young and Mike Larochelle each added a double and two singles, while Alex Means had three singles and Nick Larochelle and Brian Hackett each doubled and singled.

Young earned the pitching win, allowing six hits and one earned run over six innings, with two strikeouts and two walks.

Murchison and Tom Lasko each had two singles for Lincoln.

In the late game, Lefty Jason Weymouth tossed seven innings of five-hit, three-run ball, striking out 11 and walking two, and Ethan Annis drove in three runs with a double and a single.

Joey Kane had a double and two singles for the winners, James Gray doubled twice with two RBIs, and Josh Withee added two singles and two RBIs.

Blake Wessel doubled and singled for Trenton, Mark Clapp and Harrison Hines had a pair of singles each, and Nick Ciomei tripled.
