BANGOR – A Calais man was indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury on drug possession charges.
Jessie Ulvila, 19, is scheduled to arraigned next Friday in U.S. District Court in Bangor for possession of OxyContin with intent to distribute.
If convicted, Ulvila faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $1 million and the forfeiture of the more than $2,000 he had in his possession when he was arrested
Ulvila was arrested on Jan. 2 in the parking lot of Marden’s Department Store in Calais after meeting with a Clifton couple. William and Brenda Sjostrom, both 41, were arrested later that same day in Clifton.
An investigation into illegal drug activity in Washington, Hancock and Penobscot counties by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and local law enforcement agencies led to the trio’s arrest, according the complaint dated Jan. 28.
Officers began surveillance of William Sjostrom on Jan. 2 because they had information that he would be driving to Machias to buy OxyContin. Instead, the Clifton man went to Calais, where he was observed meeting in his vehicle with Ulvila.
More than 30 OxyContin pills that originated in Canada and nearly $2,200 in cash were seized by officers from Ulvila’s vehicle, according to court documents. The Sjostroms had 34 OxyContin tablets, also originating from Canada, in their possession when they were arrested.
Ulvila was released on $5,000 unsecured bail in January, when information on his case was sealed. He was re-arrested last week on an alleged bail violation but released again until specifics about the alleged violation could be presented to the court.
A motion to detain Ulvila until his case is resolved was filed Friday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Bangor. A hearing date has not been set.
William Sjostrom pleaded not guilty last month to three counts of possession of OxyContin with intent to distribute and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Brenda Sjostrom pleaded not guilty last month to one count of possession of OxyContin with intent to distribute.
Both remain free on bail.
