Eyelash curlers, water guns, stoves recalled

No pun intended, but keep an eye out for the following products recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

. Eyelash curlers manufactured in China and imported by the W.E. Bassett Co. of Shelton, Conn., have plastic handles that could detach and cause consumers to lose their grip, resulting in injuries to the eyes and face. Bassett has received reports of injuries when the grip handles broke off, causing abrasions, contusions and bruising in and around the eye.

The “frosted grip” curlers have pink plastic handles, are sold with a rubber refill pad, and marketed under various brand names, including TRIM and Salon Plus. There are no identifying marks on the curler, but item numbers are printed on the packaging. Item numbers involved in the recall include 5-87B (sold at Wal-Mart, CVS and Shopko), 5-87RA (sold at Rite Aid), and 5-87S (sold at Kroger) from September 2003 to June 2004 for between $3 and $4.

Consumers should stop using these eyelash curlers immediately and contact the Bassett Co. for a prepaid mailer to return the eyelash curler for a free replacement plus a $5 coupon toward any TRIM product. For information, call Bassett toll-free at (877) 929-1933 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or visit its Web site at www.trim.com.

. Pool pump water guns have also been recalled. These 15-inch-long water guns, shaped like giant syringes, were imported from Hong Kong and sold at Kmart stores from January 2004 through June 2004 for about $2.

When placed in a pool, they fill with water when the handle at the top of the device is pulled, and shoot water when pushed. They have either an orange tube with green handle and nozzle or a yellow tube with blue handle and nozzle. There is no writing on the water guns themselves.

The cone-shaped nozzle can fly off the water gun and cause injury. There have been reports of injuries to children, including cuts and bruises to the face and head.

Consumers should stop using the water guns and return them to a Kmart store for a full refund. Call (866) 562-7848 anytime, or visit the company’s Web site at www.kmart.com.

. Snow Peak Giga Power White Gas Camping Stoves have been recalled. These camp stoves are manufactured in Japan, distributed by Snow Peak USA Inc. of Clackamas, Ore., and were sold at camping and outdoor recreation stores from August 2001 through June 2004 for about $150. The pump was sold separately for about $40.

Plastic parts in the pump connected to the camping stove can crack or become dislodged.

When exposed to extreme temperature change, the blue plastic shrinks around the aluminum parts and has been observed to crack the outer plastic housing. The air tube on some of the pumps can become unglued and dislodged. Both of these failures can permit gas to leak and cause a fire.

The recall involves the Snow Peak Giga Power White Gas (camping) Stove GS-010 with an output of 10,000 Btu. The stove’s main feature is that it will ignite without priming. Model numbers are located on the instruction manual and the name “Snow Peak” is on the front base of the stove, two of the four support legs and the fuel bottle.

Consumers should return the pump to the store where purchased or to the firm for a free replacement pump. To return the pump to Snow Peak USA, call customer service at (503) 697-3330 for its UPS account number and a Return Merchandise Authorization number to add to the outside of the box for quicker turn-around time.
