‘Jacks hold off Elmira Burke shot lifts streaking Bangor

BANGOR – Another game, another solid start on the mound, and another hero for the Bangor Lumberjacks.

The Lumberjacks notched their seventh win in the last eight games and maintained a share of first place for the second straight day with a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Elmira on a steamy, sultry Sunday afternoon.

“It’s a different hero every game with this team,” said first baseman Mark Burke.

Sunday was Burke’s turn to play hero and he did, with a two-run home run to right center with one out in the eighth. The 350-foot shot allowed Bangor to take three out of four against the Pioneers and send them on six-game road trip with an 11-3 record. Bangor also won Saturday night 3-0.

“I was looking for a pitch middle-in. The one before that was there and I pulled it foul, so I wanted to wait just a tad second longer if he came in again,” Burke said. “I was looking to do exactly that … Take it out of the yard. He gave it to me and fortunately the best part of the bat hit the ball.”

Burke’s blast followed an Elmira throwing error which allowed Derry Hammond to reach base with what became the tying run. It also made a winner out of reliever John Boker (3-0), who followed up two sub-par outings with two straight solid appearances on Saturday and Sunday. Boker pitched two hitless innings of shutout ball, striking out three of the six batters he faced.

“That could be the biggest hit of the year right there,” said Bangor manager Kash Beauchamp. “He’s probably the best lefthanded hitter against lefties in the league with seven of his 10 home runs against them.”

The 4-9 Pioneers scored twice in the second on a leadoff homer to left center by Steve Checksfield, a Yugi Nerei single, and back-to-back, one-out singles by Ronnie Deck and Jobu Morita.

Bangor halved its deficit in the fifth. Shin Uchino led off with a double to right center, went to third on Rolando Bello’s single, and scored on Jeff Brooks’ groundout to third.

Starter Clayton Andrews turned in a fourth straight solid outing, going seven innings, allowing eight hits and one walk, and notching six strikeouts.

“My changeup started working really well in the middle innings and I threw it more, but they never made the adjustment on it, so it was my changeup and offspeed stuff that worked best,” said Andrews, who struck out the side in the fifth.

On Saturday night, Matt Scheuing threw six innings of shutout ball, allowed five hits and two walks, and notched six strikeouts to notch his team-high seventh win and lead the Lumberjacks to the 3-0 victory.

All of Bangor’s runs came in the fourth, when Burke and Uchino led off with back-to-back singles and then advanced on a double steal. Catcher Ryan Smith’s throw to third sailed into left field, allowing Burke to score and Uchino to go to third. Rolando Bello scored Uchino with a single to right and Paul Powell hit his second of three singles on the night to set up Jose Garcia’s RBI single to right.

Lance Calmus picked up his fifth save of the season despite giving up a double in the ninth.

GAME NOTES – Just as Bangor got leading home run hitter and RBI producer Derry Hammond back from a hand injury, they lost their other primary power source after first baseman-designated hitter Donnie Ross was plunked on the hand Friday night. X-rays of Ross’ hand were negative for broken bones, but he was held out of the lineup both Saturday and Sunday and is day-to-day in terms of his playing status.
