UMaine goalie Jean leaving for Bentley Lundin, Shelley will back up Howard

University of Maine goalie Ray Jean of Randolph, who backed up Jimmy Howard and Frank Doyle the past two seasons, has transferred to Bentley College in Waltham, Mass. according to Maine coach Tim Whitehead.

Jean, a former standout at Gardiner High and Kents Hill School, appeared in five games over the two seasons and played a total of 40 minutes, 35 seconds.

He allowed one goal and made 21 saves.

Bentley College, which plays in Division I Atlantic Hockey (formerly MAAC), has gone 32-81-8 over the last four seasons including 9-19-4 last season.

Matt Lundin, selected the state of Minnesota’s top senior goalie last year, will back up second-team All-American Jimmy Howard this coming season and Whitehead said Gray’s Ryan Shelley will be the No. 3 goalie.

Shelley, a recruited walk-on, played at Portland’s Cheverus High School and for the Portland Junior Pirates.

Whitehead said he encouraged Jean to transfer “because he’s overqualified for the job he had with us.

“He really needs to play some games. He deserves a better opportunity to play. I’m really happy for him. He’ll be a great addition to Bentley’s program,” said Whitehead.

“He was fabulous for us. You couldn’t have asked for more. He was a true team player,” said Whitehead. “He never complained a bit. He helped Frank and Jimmy improve by competing so hard. Many days, when we’d play small (sided) games, he’d be the best of the three.”

Whitehead said Shelley will be a “great addition as a third goalie” for the Bears.

“He’s a good athlete with a great attitude who comes highly recommended by his coaches,” said Whitehead. “He’s got the potential to really do a nice job in that position.”
