LYNN, Mass. – J.C Huguet pitched 5 2/3 innings of two-run baseball out of the Bangor bullpen to help the Lumberjacks defeat the North Shore Spirit 10-4 in Northeast League baseball action Tuesday night at New Fraser Field.
Huguet gave up six hits and two runs while striking out five and walking to improve to 3-2.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, North Shore struck for two runs against Bangor starter Jerry Long. Mike Granger leadoff with a single to right and advanced to second on a basehit by Nelson Teilon. Vic Davilla then laced an RBI single to center, scoring Granger with the Spirit’s first run.
Teilon would score one batter later on a groundout by center fielder Rob Fischer.
Bangor’s attack was led by Kaz Kohno and Brad Hargreaves. Kohno finished the game with three hits and a run scored. Hargreaves was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Cleanup hitter Derry Hammond hit his league-leading 18th home run, a solo shot in the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, Teilon hit an opposite field solo home run, his ninth of the season, to cut the Lumberjacks lead to 6-3. Onix Mercado would add a solo shot of his own in the eighth, but that’s as close as the Spirit would get.
John Kelly (7-3, 2.88) takes the mound for the Spirit on Wednesday afternoon and will face Bangor’s Isaac Pavlik (1-0, 2.03). Wednesday’s game begins at noon.
