Farm fresh

Stumped by surplus summer squash? Too many cukes got you in a pickle? Don’t fear, the Stutzmans are here. Stutzman Farms in Sangerville will host cooking demonstrations at the farm stand at noon every Wednesday through Aug. 25. Area nutritionists, health experts and guest chefs will show new and fun ways to prepare fruits and vegetables. The demonstrations are made possible by a grant from the Maine Nutrition Network and Five a Day The Maine Way, an initiative committed to nutrition for Maine senior citizens. The events are free and open to the public.

Lobster on Long Island

Now here’s a getaway you can really sink your teeth into. On Saturday, Aug. 14, the fishing village of Frenchboro on Long Island will host its 42nd annual lobster dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The island, located eight miles off Mount Desert Island, is a year-round fishing community of 60 people. The menu will include Maine lobster, chicken salad, hot dogs, coleslaw and homemade pie, and you can work up an appetite by walking some of the island’s trails, visiting the one-room schoolhouse or stopping by the Frenchboro Historical Society and Gift Shop. The Maine State Ferry will leave Bass Harbor at 9 a.m. and leave for the return voyage at 3:30 p.m. For information, call 334-2974, 334-2923 or visit www.islandportpress.com/frenchboro.
