North Shore’s Kelly shuts down ‘Jacks

LYNN, Mass. – Starting pitcher John Kelly pitched eight scoreless innings and struck out a team-record 16 batters to lead North Shore to a 5-0 victory over Bangor in Northeast League action Wednesday afternoon.

Kelly improved to 8-3 by allowing six hits and two walks in eight innings. He helped the Spirit hand Bangor starter Isaac Pavlik his first loss of the season despite Pavlik striking out nine batters in 5 2/3 innings of work.

North Shore, now 11-5, opened the scoring with one in the third inning off a Vic Davilla RBI single. A four-run sixth put things on ice for the Spirit as Brian Macchi delivered a two-run double, Yuri Sanchez singled home Macchi, and Sanchez scored on an error.

Bangor moves to 12-5 in the second half of NEL play. Former reliever Pavlik (1-1) allowed six hits and three walks in his outing.

Second baseman Rolando Bello led the Lumberjacks with three singles.

Bangor travels to Quebec City to take on the Quebec Capitales in a three-game series before returning to Bangor for a seven-game homestand Monday.
