Prize musicians

ROCKPORT – Two Bangor area youths are among seven prize winners who will be honored during a student concert sponsored by Bay Chamber Concerts at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Rockport Opera House. Each winner, who will perform a solo work, will receive a $1,000 prize.

Local winners are:

. Jeremy Viner, a jazz saxophonist from Orono.

. Ashley Emerson, a soprano from Bangor.

Tickets are $5 at the door. Those under 22 are admitted free.

Bangor class reunion

BANGOR – It’s the last call for Bangor High School’s Class of 1984. Its 20th year class reunion is set for Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Spectacular Event Center. Organizers need to hear from those who plan to attend in order to finalize plans. Some reunion festivities will take place Friday night, Aug. 13. Brewer schools

BREWER – Joan Staffiere has been named administrator for kindergarten through second grade in the Brewer School Department. She will be principal of Pendleton Street and Capri Street Schools.

Staffiere most recently served as principal of Eddington School for 10 years.

She is a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington and has a master’s degree in administration from the University of Maine.

Before taking the Eddington job she had taught and been librarian at the Dedham School for several years.

In Brewer, Staffiere will oversee some 200 first- and second-graders at Pendleton Street and 120 preschool and kindergarten pupils at Capri Street.

Central High School

CORINTH – Yolanda Elliott, a recent graduate of Central High School, has been awarded a Sam Walton Community Scholarship.

Elliott, who will attend the University of Findlay in Ohio, was a recipient of the academic physical science award, academic French I award and academic U.S. history award at Central.

She tutored a middle school pupil and was a teacher’s aide for a French I class. She played trumpet in the band and participated in the one-act play. Elliott graduated with honors.

She is active in the Next Generation 4-H Baby Beef Club.

Vafiades Scholarship

PITTSFIELD – University of Maine School of Law student Matthew Stein of Pittsfield has been named the first recipient of a scholarship in memory of the late Bangor attorney, Lewis V. Vafiades.

The scholarship was established to provide tuition scholarship to exceptional Maine students, preferably residents of northern Maine. Fund raising to continue the size of the endowment continues.

Vafiades, a graduate of Bangor High School, Bowdoin College and Boston University School of Law, served on Maine Law’s Board of Visitors and on the planning committee for the UM School of Law’s recently completed capital campaign.

Barnard College

NEW YORK – Arielle Bridges has been named to the dean’s list for the 2003-2004 academic year at Barnard College. She is the daughter of Donna Accettullo of Brewer.

Beal College

Bryant College

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Area students named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Bryant College are Jennifer Robertson of Bangor and Ashley Beaudoin of Hermon.

Cornerstone University

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Jared Davis of Brewer has been named to the dean’s list at Cornerstone University. He is the son of Roger Davis and Patrice Rogers and a graduate of Concord Christian School.

Providence College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Amber Rankin of Holden has been named to the dean’s list at Providence College. She is a member of the Class of 2007.

Quinnipiac University

HAMDEN, Conn. – Cara McEwen graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from Quinnipiac University. She also was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester and received the Student Achievement Award in occupational therapy.

She is the daughter of Kevin and Cindy McEwen of Brewer.

University of Maine

ORONO – Richard A. Grant of Brunswick has been named the new director of graduate programs and executive education for the University of Maine Business School.

He replaces Richard Borgman, associate professor of finance, who has returned to full-time teaching.

As director of graduate programs, Grant manages the master of business administration and master of science in accounting programs and will develop new programs for business leaders and executives already advanced in their careers.

Grant holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern Maine.

His professional background is in retailing and direct marketing with L.L. Bean and Timberland.

At L.L. Bean, he served in several capacities: as senior analyst in strategic planning, a business analyst in merchandising, assistant manager in product quality and direct shipment coordinator in customer service.

At Timberland, Grant served as store manager for the company’s first factory outlet in Brunswick and the second store in Burlington, Vt.

Grant also worked as an independent writer under the business name Right Word Communications and has been a contributing business writer for the Portland-based Interface newspaper group since 2002.

He is a member of the Portland Marketing Association and Maine Public Relations Council and has contributed numerous hours volunteering for several organizations, including various roles in United Way of Greater Portland fundraising campaigns, a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Brunswick, a USM alumni board member, secretary of the USM School of Business Alumni Chapter, and a member of the advocacy steering committee and the student business plan competition committee at USM.

Grant recently was selected into the Leadership Maine program for 2004-2005.

Leadership Maine is a year-long experiential program, which provides 40 established leaders with a statewide perspective of the economy information to meet the challenges of tomorrow and encourages the building of networks to spark collaborative change in Maine.

University of New England

BIDDEFORD – Daleine Richards has been named to the dean’s list at the University of New England. She is a 2003 graduate of Nokomis High School and the daughter of Linda-Lee Richards of Hartland and Dale Ray Richards of Canaan.
