WASHINGTON – Maine has been awarded $1,225,043 in federal funding for various justice programs throughout Maine, according to U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins.

The federal awards were distributed by the U.S. Department of Justice as follows:

. $708,000 to the Maine Department of Corrections for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, which seeks to curb alcohol and substance abuse, prevent serious and violent crimes, and discourage gang involvement in Maine’s youth.

. $300,041 to the University of Maine’s Office of Research & Economic Development, for the reduction of violent crimes against women on university campuses throughout the state.

. $142,629 to the Family Violence Project in Augusta. This program enhances collaborative partnerships among criminal justice agencies, victim services providers and community organizations to respond to and prevent crimes of domestic violence, dating violence and child abuse.

. $74,373 to the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence in Bangor, for the State Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Coalition Programs which train volunteers and professionals for member rape crisis centers and provide comparable support to battered women’s shelters for victims of domestic violence.
