ORONO – An Orono juvenile has been charged with arson in connection with a brush fire set Thursday at Havasu Pines Mobile Home Park.

The juvenile’s identity was not released, said Orono police Sgt. Scott Wilcox.

Thursday’s fire started at 2:42 p.m. and singed an area a little less than a quarter of an acre along the Havasu Road, according Fire Chief Lorin Lecleire.

The road is home to a four-wheeler trail with piles of brush left over from when the area was used as a slash operation. The fire, which was set with a cigarette lighter, burned a little out of the pile and into the woods.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire after 20 minutes, Lecleire said.

“We have a brush truck, so we were able to drive right in there,” the chief said.

The property owner had an excavator and helped set a hand line around the fire so it wouldn’t spread, which Lecleire said was a big help.

Damage was estimated at $500, according to Wilcox. Nobody was hurt during the fire.
