Cash stolen from Hampden Subway

Hampden police responded Monday morning to a burglary at the Subway sandwich shop on Western Avenue after the opening clerk noticed items missing.

Sgt. Scott Webber said a cash box holding about $200 and a safe that contained nothing of significant value were taken. The incident occurred sometime after 10 p.m. Sunday or before 8 a.m. Monday. There was no sign of forced entry, the officer said.

“It’s possible they picked the lock or had access to a key,” Webber said Monday.

There are no suspects at this time and the case is under investigation, Webber said.

One person was arrested and two others were issued summonses Sunday after Brewer police responded to a call at Oak Hill Cemetery.

“We’ve had a rash of vandalism [at the cemetery] and have put out fliers to residents to call if they see anything suspicious,” Sgt. Jason Moffitt said Monday. “This is a good reminder for residents.”

Moffitt and three other officers approached shortly after 10 p.m. five people who had congregated near the mortuary. The officer said he warned the group not to visit cemeteries after sundown per state law.

Moffitt also questioned Philip Smith, 20, of Bangor, who told the officer he was on probation and had a random search clause. The officer searched Smith and found 14 large pills identified as hydrocodone, a tranquilizer. Smith was arrested on probation violation and issued a summons for possession of a Schedule W drug.

The officers also questioned the rest of the group and issued Brian Wheeler, 19, of Bangor a summons for trafficking in dangerous knives and Amanda Flynn, 18, of Lubec a summons for possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

A recently separated boyfriend and girlfriend were each issued summonses for related incidents Monday.

Scott Young, 22, called Hampden police to report an assault, Sgt. Scott Webber said Monday. Young told police his former girlfriend, Tracy Lee, 30, also of Hampden had slapped him in the face and broke a window at his mother’s home.

Lee admitted she assaulted Young but only because he had taken items from her home, Webber said. Young lived with Lee until recently when he moved in with his mother, the officer said. Lee told police she drove by Young’s mother’s home, saw her bicycle there and stopped to confront Young.

Young was charged with Class E theft after telling police he needed the bicycle to get home, Webber said. Lee was charged with Class D assault.
