FRANKFORT – A Brooks man was killed Monday night when he was ejected from his rolling pickup truck after it slammed into a railroad trestle on Loggin Road.
Stanley L. Wellman, 49, of Brooks had just turned from Route 1A onto Loggin Road and began accelerating his 2001 GMC pickup when it struck the trestle’s abutment and began rolling over, officials said.
The bridge is about 1,000 feet from the junction of Route 1A and Loggin Road.
“Witnesses said that at the time of the crash the vehicle was accelerating,” Waldo County Chief Deputy Bob Keating said Tuesday.
The accident was reported at 7:39 p.m. Monday. Wellman was taken by Winterport Ambulance to a park off Route 1A, where he was picked up by LifeFlight helicopter and taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was pronounced dead at 9 p.m., Keating said.
Deputy Matt Curtis was the investigating officer, and Deputy Ben Seekins was assigned to reconstruct the accident.
Keating said Tuesday that it was too early in the investigation to determine whether alcohol was a factor. Police are awaiting the results of toxicology tests as there was no indication of alcohol use found at the scene, he said.
