SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Hampden-Newburgh-Winterport Junior League softball team is one win away from a berth in the Junior League World Series.

HNW rolled to an 11-3 win over Rhode Island in Wednesday’s semifinal, which puts the Maine representative into Thursday’s championship game against Pennsylvania. The championship game is at noon.

Pennsylvania beat Maryland 6-1 Wednesday.

The winner of Thursday’s game advances to the Junior League World Series, which is being held this year in Kirkland, Wash.

“They’re right through the roof,” said Rodney Wells, who coaches the team. “It’s unbelieveable. They’re one game away from the World Series.”

HNW is now 5-1 in the tournament. The team went 4-1 in pool play, including a 7-4 loss to New York on Tuesday in the final pool-play game.

Morgan Doyon sparked the Maine team in the sixth inning of its semifinal win. HNW and Rhode Island were tied 3-3 in the sixth when Doyon hit a single to drive in Eva Shannon, who led off with a single.

“That was a big hit for [Doyon],” Wells said. “That kind of started everything and then we hit up and down the order.”

HNW scored five more runs in the sixth.

HNW finished with 11 hits. Amanda Palmer had two doubles while Mikki Libbey and Michelle Wells each singled twice.

Wells got the start and pitched three innings. Lacey Littlefield closed out the game. The two combined to allow three hits while striking out five and walking two.

Wells said Littlefield will get the start Thursday.

The Maine team will face a tough Pennsylvania squad for the World Series berth. Pennsylvania went 5-0 in its pool and is now 6-0 after its semifinal.

“They’re fantastic,” Wells said. “They can hit, they have a great short game, defensively they’re extremely strong. They’re a fantastic team and they’ve won it before.”

On Tuesday, HNW had 10 hits but also committed four errors in the loss to New York.

Kate Plowman had three singles, while Wells and Ashley Gott each chipped in with two singles. Gott and Wells combined to strike out seven and walk five.
