Leadership retreat

BANGOR – Youth Adelantando, a Bangor youth group affiliated with PICA, is inviting area teenagers to its first Summer Leadership Retreat. The retreat will be held Aug. 13-15 at the Bangor Public Library and at PICA, 170 Park St.

Organized by Youth Adelantando and retreat coordinator Natalya Grokh, the retreat is designed to inspire and teach youth how to organize in their communities and build youth leadership to face some of the most pressing issues facing youth in the community, including the Bangor youth curfew, youth emigration from Bangor, and globalization.

Retreat presenters will include a graduate of Youth Adelantando who works as a youth organizer in El Salvador, youth rights experts, and advocates for both free trade and fair trade.

“The purpose of the retreat is to learn about globalization and its impact on youth in our communities and elsewhere,” said Youth Adelantando member Shotaro Takahashi.

“Let’s prove that youth’s voice is just as loud,” added Michael Chaisson, also of Youth Adelantando. “Come to the retreat and learn how to voice your opinion.”

“A simulation debate about free and fair trade, workshops on youth leadership, and a community service activity chosen by the youth will make the information come alive,” explained Natalya Grokh.

Youth Adelantando – youth going forward – is a group of 13- to 18-year-olds from diverse backgrounds. Working on such issues as sweatshops and youth rights, members of Youth Adelantando believe that youth everywhere should have a greater voice in their lives and communities.

To register for the retreat, visit www.pica.ws/ya, or call PICA at 947-4203.
