BANGOR – What to teen and ‘tween girls like to do the most? Talk.
Zoey’s Room was created specifically with girls’ gabby nature in mind. Zoey’s Room is an interactive Web site and an after school technology club for girls of middle school age.
The Bangor Public Library will feature a presentation about Zoey’s Room at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the library. The lecture will show parents and teachers how to get Zoey’s Room into their schools.
Research has shown that girls, who sometimes get bored with traditional computer classes, thrive when they are able to form social groups around a specific subject. In Zoey’s Room they are encouraged to talk as much as they like in a safe, moderated chat room where they may sound off on issues that affect their lives in a special chat forum called Ladies Lounge. Past topics have included, Does IM Make U Dum? and Mean Girls: HI-Tech Wars.
Each month, Fab Females, professional women in the areas of math, science and technology, chat about their jobs and lifestyles with girls logged on to Zoey’s Room. Fab Females have included a professional videographer from New York City, and top female executives at Sports Illustrated magazine and E Entertainment.
By drawing girls in slowly, using the kind of technology they are most attracted to, Zoey’s Room builds the girls’ technological skills.
Coinciding with former Maine Gov. Angus King’s laptop initiative, 24 Maine middle schools embraced Zoey’s Room last year. Each Zoey’s Room club met once a week with an adult club leader after school. There, girls had the freedom to develop computer skills and explore their natural creativity in a nonthreatening environment. They learned to use the Internet, how to build a personal Web site and how to use digital media to make home movies and creative presentations.
