2 NASCAR fans love animals

Damian, 12, and Michael, 11, are brothers. They share the same winning smile, the same bright eyes with just a glimmer of mischief in them, and a love for things fast and loud.

The brothers also are two of the 2,924 Maine children in the care of the state Department of Health and Human Services. Like 227 other children in that total, Damian and Michael are legally free for adoption and are seeking an adoptive family that can provide them with love, support and a safe environment.

Damian and Michael’s interest in noisy, speedy things was piqued July 22 when the boys visited Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough for a filming session scheduled for a “Thursday’s Child” television segment that will appear on WGME 13 in Portland.

The boys are two of six siblings who came into DHHS care in 1999. Damian is a friendly boy who describes himself as “kind, caring and creative.” He has special interests in astronomy and geology and aspires to become either a veterinarian or an astronaut. He has many interests, but particularly enjoys computers, video games, fishing and baseball.

Damian is in good physical health but has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

He takes a small amount of medication for his ADHD and attends weekly counseling. Damian has done very well in a home that is consistent and structured. He is a good student and loves science and math. Damian no longer receives special education services at school, but has in the past.

Michael is very friendly, sensitive and caring. He enjoys all sports, but he likes soccer and baseball best. He also enjoys skiing, swimming and riding bikes. Michael loves playing video and computer games, fishing and watching NASCAR on television. He is seeking a family that will play ball with him and cheer for him at his soccer and baseball games.

Michael is a hard worker and strives to do well. He needs special help in writing and spelling because of a mild learning disability. Michael has been diagnosed with ADHD and PTSD. He takes a small amount of medication for his ADHD and attends weekly counseling.

Damian and Michael would be a wonderful addition to any family. A family that can provide a loving, yet structured, home for them is ideal.

This family also should be able to have clear and consistent rules. Damian and Michael would like to be adopted together and are looking for a family with pets and other children. They also are seeking a family that can provide a smoke-free environment for them.
