Theatrical re-creation of the life of a Maine sea captain’s child

Sandra Piechocki is perhaps best known as half of the performing duo The OutofHand Puppets. She and co-creator Linda Stec have performed a unique blend of fantasy and comedy at libraries, schools and fairs throughout Maine since 1983.

As an actress, Piechocki also is noted for her many outstanding performances with The Belfast Maskers and as narrator of stories by Sarah Orne Jewett and other New England writers for Audio Bookshelf.

“At Home At Sea” is Piechocki’s theatrical re-creation of the life of a Maine sea captain’s child in the late 19th century, based on the book “Letters from Sea, 1882-1901: Joanna and Lincoln Colcord’s Seafaring Childhood” (Tilbury House). This interactive theater piece was researched and created with the help of a grant from the Maine Humanities Council, bringing to life the days when Searsport, Maine, was the home port of one out of every 10 captains of America’s cargo ship fleet.

McFravis is a fiddling family of sisters, cousins, mothers and daughters. With its unusual blend of violins and voices, McFravis creates harmony-filled renditions of traditional tunes from Atlantic Canada, the Appalachians, Ireland, Scotland and Scandinavia. Its rich sound appeals to all ages. The fiddlers include Janet McMahon and her daughters Josie Davis, 12, and Sophie Davis, 9, from Waldoboro, Maine, and Judy McMahon and her daughters Anna French, 14, and Maya French, 11, from Swanville, Maine.

Tony Sohns, ‘Leapin’ Lizards’

Tony Sohns is a natural history educator from Bucksport, Maine. He is on the summer education staff of the Maine Discovery Museum in Bangor. He inspires people of all ages with his colorful presentation of live arthropods – joint-legged creatures – ranging from hissing beetles to African millipedes. Sohns travels the country, finding and studying new critters and delighting and informing audiences with his programs and collections.
