Bangor room yields interesting genealogy resources

Browsing in the stacks in the Bangor Room at Bangor Public Library, I came upon a couple of interesting resources for researchers Down East, both published by Picton Press.

The two-volume “Early Narraguagus River Families of Washington County, Maine,” by Darryl B. Lamson and Leonard F. Tibbetts, covers 390 family lines from Cherryfield, Harrington, Steuben, Deblois and Devereaux.

Some of the more prominent – those that cover at least a dozen pages – include the families of John Archer, Jesse and David Brown, Alexander Campbell, Richard Coffin, Ebenezer Cole, Samuel Colson, John Dinsmore, Henry Dyer, Thomas Fickett, Hatevil Leighton, Joel Moore, John Nash, Tristram and Richard Pinkham, John Small, Job Smith, Joseph Strout, Josiah Tucker, Samuel Wakefield, John Wallace and Ichabod Willey.

Appendix III includes census records for Beddington, 1840; Cherryfield, 1790-1810 and 1820-1840; Deblois, 1800 and 1837; Devereaux, 1837; Harrington, 1790 and 1800-1840; Milbridge, 1850; and Steuben, 1790 and 1800-1840.

The authors’ names are reversed in the one-volume “Early Pleasant River Families of Washington County, Maine,” by Leonard F. Tibbetts and Darryl B. Lamson.

Prominent families in this book include Obediah Allen, Richard and Samuel Coffin, Joseph Drisko, Samuel Leighton, Daniel Look, Daniel Merritt, John Nash, Seth Norton, Moses Plummer, Joseph Tabbutt, Wilmot Wass and Moses Worcester.

Another book I found in the Bangor Room was “A Dutch-English Odyssey: Stories of Brewer and Estey Families in North America 1636-1996,” by Floyd I. Brewer, who grew up in Bridgewater in Aroostook County.

Here are a couple of the interesting chapter titles:

. From flour miller Adam Brouwer (1620-1693) of Brooklyn, N.Y., to painting contractor Elwood Brewer (1890-1976) of Bridgewater, Maine.

. The saga of fisherman Jeffrey Estey (1586-1657) of Salem, Mass., and the unexpected trail to homemaker Mary Estey Brewer (1893-1945) of Bridgewater, Maine.

It’s time for the free Hancock County Genealogy Society fair, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at St. Dunstan’s Church in Ellsworth. Learn more about the Daughters of the American Revolution, the new Gray Family book, Maine Families in 1790 project, Maine Memory Network and the Trenton Cemetery book.

Hear Patsy Jordan speak on “Have Genealogy – Will Travel.” Magical Memories Scrapbooking will demonstrate heritage scrapbooking. There will be vendors on hand and free packets of information.

The Penobscot County Genealogical Society will hold its Aug. 18 meeting at 6 p.m. at the Kinsley House, the home of the Hampden Historical Society, 83 Main Road South, Hampden.

This will be a great opportunity to find out about the resources available at the society, including the Katherine Trickey Archives.
