Assaults get Solon man long jail time

SKOWHEGAN – A Solon man was sentenced Monday to the maximum allowable jail time for repeatedly assaulting his domestic partner.

Somerset County District Attorney Evert Fowle called Jason Lawrence, 27, “one of the worst domestic violence offenders we have ever dealt with” and said he had a history of chronic violations dating to 1997.

Lawrence was sentenced Monday to four years and three months in prison for three counts of domestic violence and a single count of terrorizing.

Fowle said Lawrence’s history of domestic violence began with three convictions in 1997 and continued with another conviction in 2001 for beating his partner and threatening to kill her baby. He served 10 months for that conviction, which was a felony, and was on probation in 2004 when he assaulted his partner three more times.

Fowle said the victim did not testify Monday due to combined fear and reticence. “She seems to be making a new life for herself,” he said.

Assistant District Attorney James Mitchell prosecuted the case and Judge Charles LaVerdiere pronounced the sentence at Skowhegan Superior Court. Justice Joseph Jabar was asked to recuse himself by Lawrence and so Jabar went across the street to sit in District Court while LaVerdiere came over to Superior Court.
