WASHBURN – Freshman Alex Bird scored on an assist from classmate Erica McDougall 3:10 into the match as the host Washburn Beavers opened their season with a 1-0 girls soccer victory over Wisdom of St. Agatha.
Amber Palmer earned the shutout in goal, making five saves on 10 Wisdom shots.
Pioneers goalie Kayla Daigle made 10 saves on 19 Washburn shots.
Hodgdon 6, Easton 1
At Easton, Brianne McGary netted three goals and Andrea Blanchette two more to lead the Hawks to the season-opening win.
Melanie Sloat added a goal for the winners and Casey Nightingale stopped five out of six shots.
Nina Alexander scored the Bears’ lone goal and Briana White blocked 17 out of 23 shots.
Madawaska 4, Van Buren 0
At Madawaska, Andrea Cyr scored a pair of goals and Liz LaPlante made five saves on six shots as Madawaska triumphed in a mutual season-opener.
Ashley Cyr and Beth Gerard scored the other goals and Kelly Chasse had an assist.
Lisa Levasseur made 13 saves on 26 shots for Van Buren.
Boys soccer
Easton 2, Hodgdon 0
At Easton, unassisted goals by Stephen Hopkins and Matt Steele lifted the host Bears to a season-opening victory.
Hopkins scored just 39 seconds into the match to give Easton a 1-0 lead. Steele’s goal came at 19:55 of the second half.
Easton goalie Mitchell Blodgett made 12 saves on 19 Hodgdon shots to earn the shutout. Jordan Quint made 22 saves on 38 Easton shots.
Washburn 13, Wisdom 0
At Washburn, Isaac Carney opened his senior season with five goals and three assists for the Beavers.
Josh Goupille added two goals and two assists, while Wade Snyder and Steve Pesut also scored two goals each.
Ethan Doody had a goal and an assist, while Adam Thompson scored on goal and Zack Bird had three assists.
Washburn goalie Jason Thompson made one save on three Wisdom shots. Justin Michaud made 30 saves on 45 Washburn shots.
Van Buren 3, Madawaska 1
At Madawaska, Jacob Doucette, Ben Doucette and Andy Martin each had a goal to lead the Crusaders to the season-opening victory.
Dustin Cyr made eight saves on 10 shots for the winners.
Miles Morneault scored on a penalty kick for the host Owls. Matt Bosse stopped 13 of 17 shots.
