BANGOR – Dominick Hayes is acutely aware of the depth of the Freehold Township (N.J.) Senior League All-Stars’ offense, an attack that has averaged more than 10 runs a game during 18 straight post-season victories.

“One through 12, on any day any one of us is capable of hitting the ball hard,” he said.

It was Hayes’ turn Monday night, as he hit his first career home run, singled twice, stole three bases and drove home five runs as the U.S. East champions overwhelmed Rotterdam, Netherlands, 16-2 in five innings to cap off the second day of the 2004 Senior League Baseball World Series at Mansfield Stadium.

Damian Csakai added three singles and A.J. Rusbarsky contributed a triple and double to Freehold Township’s 14-hit, seven stolen-base offense. Marc Hubbert doubled and singled for the New Jersey team, while Mike LaCava chipped in with two singles.

Freehold Township is now 2-0 in Pool B, and faces a big test at 5 p.m. Tuesday against U.S. Southwest champion Greater Helotes National Little League of San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio edged Maracaibo, Venezuela 2-1 earlier Monday, and also is 2-0 in Pool B.

“They’re a very good club,” said Freehold Township manager Mike Brach. “I’ve seen them play a couple of times, but we’re at full strength for them pitching-wise, and that’s where we want to be. It should be a good ballgame.”

Freehold Township is at full strength on the mound because Brach was able to use five different pitchers one inning each after scoring five runs in the bottom of the first against Rotterdam, the Europe-Middle East-Africa champion.

The five pitchers, Brett Brach, Shawn Boysen, Jason Nardi, Hayes and Ryan Cuneo, combined to throw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts and three walks. Boysen earned the win by striking out two during a 1-2-3 second inning.

Rotterdam (0-2) scored a pair of unearned runs in the fifth inning before the game was halted by the 10-run mercy rule.

Freehold Township’s first-inning rally started modestly, as Rusbarsky reached on an error, Cuneo walked and Boysen was hit by a pitch, all with one out. LaCava singled home a run, Korey Yngstrom plated a run with a fielder’s choice, and Hayes hit an infield single to drive home another run and then stole three bases, the last one home plate on an attempted double-steal.

“We took advantage of every miscue they made, and then we got the bats going, and that’s pretty much where we’re at,” said Brach.

Freehold Township added three runs in the second, two on a 350-blast over the right-field fence by Hayes.
