In a summer of new races, a another new one is popping up in Stockton Springs.
The first annual Stockton Springs Run around Cape Jellison will take place on Sunday, Aug. 29 at the Public Boat Access. The race is a 5.25-mile jaunt around Cape Jellison.
The race is being sponsored by the Stockton Springs Business Association, which is a non-profit organization comprised of Stockton businesses, according to co-race director Cynthia Wells.
“Our purpose is to improve the business environment in Stockton Springs,” she said. “The Cape Run, we hope, will be a significant fund raiser in the future.”
A whole weekend of activities surrounding the race will be planned, including a regatta on Saturday, Aug. 28. Children’s activities such as games highlight race day. All activities except for the race and pig roast ($7 for a hamburger or $4 for a hot dog) are free.
The entry fee for the race is $10 in advance and $12 on race day. Registration gets underway at 8 a.m. at the Stockton Boat Access. All participants must be 12 years of age or older, and all runners will get a T-shirt. For more information contact Wells at 567-3923. Entry forms are available at www.sub5.com.
It’s Blueberry time
This weekend, the Sub 5 race series rumbles into Machias for the 29th annual Machias Blueberry Festival 5-Mile Run.
The race is one of the more popular stops on the Sub 5 slate. Between the 1-mile fun run and 5-miler, 295 runners finished a year ago.
Former Narraguagus of Harrington stars dominated last year. Caleb Paul was the overall winner last year, touring the hilly course in 27:27 while another former Knight, Gladys Ganiel, took the women’s title in 30:10, 42 seconds better than Anne Favolise of Columbia.
A chance to see the HA course
If you’re a high school cross country runner is slated to run in the Pendale Invitational but have never run the course at Hampden Academy, you might want to consider the Warren Bishop Memorial run Saturday, Aug. 28 at 9 a.m.
The race is run entirely on HA’s 2.84-mile cross country course. It’s a fairly big event, as just under 100 runners finished last year. Former HA standout Brian Herasymchuck took the top spot, completing the hilly course in 16 minutes, 9 seconds.
A 1.5-mile run/walk will also be held. Registration forms are available at Hampden Academy. Those seeking more information may contact Dick Balentine at 862-4562.
Finishing Kick: Runners have a plethora of options to choose from over the weekend.
On Saturday, the Winthrop Rambler 5K will take place at the high school at 8 a.m. Down in Jefferson, the Jefferson 5K will go off at 8:30 while the Gorham Trails 5K will also take place.
