HAMPDEN – Hampden Children’s Day will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, with a variety of events throughout the day.
The annual Hampden Kiwanis pancake breakfast will take place 7-9 a.m. at Hampden Kiwanis Civic Center, Main Road. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12.
Bike decorating, sponsored by Kidspeace New England Treatment Foster Care Agency, will start at 9:30 a.m. in front of Reeds Brook Middle School. Youngsters are encouraged to bring their bikes or other wheeled toys to ride in the Annual Children’s Parade. Helmets are required. Kidspeace will provide the decorations.
The parade will line up at the school at 10 a.m. and will start at 11 a.m. at the school and end at Graves Supermarket on Route 9. Parade awards are sponsored by the Bangor Daily News.
Activities, which run from noon to 4 p.m. are:
. Kiwanis Quarter Booth Games.
. Maine Department of Human Services-A Family for ME – bean bag toss.
. Bounce House, operated by TDS Telecom and sponsored by the Best Western-White House Inn.
. Inflatable obstacle course, operated and sponsored by the Hampden Recreation Department.
. Maine Discovery Museum activity.
. Horse-drawn carriage rides: Cost $1 per person, $5 per family.
. CHIPS child identification program, provided by the Hampden Masons of Mystic Lodge and the Maine Dental Association. Parents will receive free fingerprint sets, teeth prints and videotapes of their children as part of the safety program, held in McGraw cafeteria.
. Cake walk, operated by TDS Telecom.
. Iggy the Clown, along with Anah clowns, on the grounds.
. Decorate a cupcake, sponsored by Sunrise Glass.
. Slip’n Slide.
. Hampden Children’s Day Information Booth. Selling 50-50 tickets.
. Pin the tail on the donkey with the Hampden Democratic Committee.
. Face painting done by Friends of Hampden Football.
. Friends of Hampden Football booth, with a chance to win a garage and other items.
. Hooked on Fishing, presented by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
. Hurdy-Gurdy man, with puppetry, mime and ventriloquism.
. Hampden-Winterport Youth Hockey, goal-shooting.
. Hamden Fire Department smoke trailer.
Scheduled events are:
. Noon-12:45 p.m., Zachary Field will perform juggling acts in the Weatherbee Gym, sponsored by the Ground Round.
. 12:30-1 p.m., Top Hat Dancers will perform under the tent.
. 1 p.m., Trophies will be awarded for winning parade entries.
. 1-2 p.m., Orrington Matsumura Seito Karate Dojo will perform a karate demonstration in Weatherbee Gym.
. 1-3 p.m., Pony rides, sponsored by TDS Telecom. Cost: $1 for ride and photo.
. 1:30 p.m., Ann Sparling will provide the opportunity to learn songs and musical games from many different cultures under the tent.
. 2:15 p.m., Morita’s School of Dance will perform under the tent.
. 2:15 p.m., Freeze pop giveaway, Children’s Day lemonade stand.
. 2:30-3 p.m., Milkweed Puppet Theater will present “Raccoon’s Riddles” in Weatherbee Gym.
. 3 p.m., Brian Wardwell, a 9-year-old 2004 North American Country Music Association Traditional Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year, will perform popular country tunes as well as some of his own.
. 3:30-4 p.m., Create a puppet with the Milkweed Puppet Theater, in Weatherbee Gym.
. 3:45 p.m., Walt and Mrs. Moose will provide the opportunity to learn the “Moose Shuffle,” and the “Lobsta Crawl” under the tent.
. 5-6:30 p.m., Baked bean supper at the VFW Hall on Canoe Club Road.
. 7-8:30 p.m. and 9-11 p.m., Chuck Foster’s All-Hit Video Dance, sponsored by Pine Tree Waste.
. 8:20 p.m., Hampden Children’s Day raffle drawings and announcements. Glow ropes are on sale now.
. 8:30-9 p.m., Hampden Children’s Day fireworks, provided by Blue Hill Pyrotechnics.
Food for the day:
. Hampden Children’s Day – French fries and doughboys.
. Hampden Children’s Day – lemonade, operated by Jane Cronk for Senate.
. VFW Auxiliary – sandwiches, hot dogs, sodas and their famous strawberry shortcakes in Weatherbee Gym.
. Kiwanis Lunch Wagon – hamburgers, hot dogs, sodas, chips and coffee.
. VFW Hall on Canoe Club Road – baked bean supper, 5-6:30 p.m.
. D.A.R.E. – ice cream floats.
All events are subject to change.
On Sunday, Aug. 22, folks are asked to show their appreciation for Hampden Children’s Day by volunteering to clean up after the festivities.
