Newport police investigating late-night vandalism, home raid

NEWPORT – A series of vandalisms and a home invasion kept Newport police busy Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The incidents began when Guilford of Maine employees working the third shift came out of the Railroad Street factory about 5 a.m. to find their vehicles damaged. Most of the cars had been entered and rifled, Newport Police Chief James Ricker said. Some had been hit with stones, and many had windows broken out.

Police were also called to Newport Elementary School when neighbors heard glass breaking. A police officer arrived on the scene so quickly that the glass was still moving, Ricker said. Three windows, including a large double-paned window at the gymnasium, were smashed.

Ricker said he is also investigating a home invasion on Park Street, where someone entered the home of an elderly couple while they were sleeping. The woman’s pocketbook was taken and emptied in the garage.

Ricker said police were busy canvassing the neighborhoods where the incidents occurred and have several promising leads.

Anyone that might have information about any of the incidents is asked to call the Newport Police Department at 368-3263.
