A Bangor man was arrested early Thursday morning after he reportedly assaulted his girlfriend for waking him up too early.
Bangor police Officer David Bushey responded shortly before 5 a.m. to a Seventh Street apartment building on a domestic assault call.
Bushey wrote in his police report that the alleged victim was “crying and very emotional” when she spoke to him.
According to the report, the woman told Bushey that she attempted to wake up her boyfriend, Matthew Butler, 23, after she heard the alarm clock go off. Butler apparently became angry with her and hit her in the face, she told Bushey.
When the woman hit him back, she said Butler “became irate” and wouldn’t let her leave the room. The woman’s 18-month old daughter also was in the room when the alleged assault took place, Bushey’s report said.
Bushey wrote that he talked to the woman’s sister, who lived in the downstairs apartment. She told the officer that she heard “thrashing” in the upstairs apartment and witnessed part of the altercation.
Bushey also questioned Butler, who said he didn’t remember exactly what happened.
Bushey wrote that based on his observations and statements from witnesses and the alleged victim, he had enough cause to arrest Butler for domestic-related assault.
Butler was taken to Penobscot County Jail. Bushey encouraged his girlfriend to go to court and seek a protection from abuse order against Butler, the officer’s report said.
