The headline for the article, “Veazie mill rate lower than expected” (BDN, Aug. 5) should have read, “Veazie taxes go up once again.”
Town Manager Bill Reed says: “Without reassessing and bringing property values in line with state guidelines, residents may have lost or suffered a reduction in their Homestead Exemption.”
By filing for the Homestead Act, we saved about $150. Our taxes went up about $500. Somehow that just doesn’t make sense. Perhaps we should be thankful our mill rate didn’t go up – just our property taxes – for the third year in a row, I might add.
We can still remember when the residents of Veazie, based on Bill Reed stating that it would lower our taxes, approved the natural gas pipeline. The gas pipeline has been in place for a number of years and each year since our taxes have gone up. Once again, the Veazie town manager has reassessed our property values. When it is our chance for the residents of Veazie to reassess the value of the town manager?
