Put back the money

I began reading Newt Gingrich’s commentary, “Finally, a Social Security solution” (BDN, Aug. 23), with doubt that I would enjoy it much. I was not disappointed.

Gingrich states: “It is well documented that if nothing is done to fix Social Security before the baby boomers retire, payroll taxes would have to increase by 20 percent or retirees would face a 30 percent cut in benefits.”

There’s an easier fix than the convoluted solution he proceeds to rally behind. Put back all of the money Congress has begged, borrowed or stolen from the Social Security “surplus” with interest. I believe a “lock box” was touted during the 2000 election.

And if eliminating unfunded liabilities remains Gingrich’s concern, let’s put everyone in Congress back on Social Security, instead of the nifty little retirement package they cooked up for themselves.

Let’s put that vote on a nationwide election ballot. Voter turnout would likely be quite high.
