Bangor boy goes to Ohio for derby

BANGOR – Tarik Stokes of Bangor participated in the second national Super Kids Classic, a soap box derby for disabled children, at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio, Aug. 14. Participants from across the United States proved the Classic’s slogan: “Every kid is a champion.”

The event was similar to the traditional All-American Soap Box Derby except that each car in the Classic had two drivers. Derby participants were children with physical and mental disabilities. They were assisted by veteran Soap Box Derby drivers from northeastern Ohio who acted as co-pilots. The racing cars were designed to accommodate children with special needs.

Stokes and his parents, drivers and their families, and sponsors attended a banquet at the host hotel, Crowne Plaza Quaker Square, in Akron. Each entrant received a participation trophy and a Super Kids kit of racing apparel and memorabilia. Race day activities included a parade.

Baton twirling classes

BREWER – The award-winning River City Twirlers have scheduled twirling classes for both Brewer and Bucksport.

Registration will be held 3-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Brewer Auditorium, and 3-7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, at Miles Lane School in Bucksport.

The equipment required is a balanced baton, which may be purchased from the instructor. Each baton must be fitted to the child to ensure the proper baton length for the child’s height and weight.

The first class of the season will be a registration and baton fitting night. Five-week sessions will run consecutively throughout the school year. Classes, which run for 45 minutes, will be scheduled between 3:15 and 8:30 p.m.

Participants will learn and perfect routines for public performances, including local parades, basketball games, competitions and an end-of-year recital.

The $35 class fee for residents, or $40 for nonresidents, is due at the first class of each session, payable to Brewer Park and Recreation or Bucksport Adult and Community Education.
