Unnecessary vaccines

I was so interested in the article, “Activist pushes for rabies-shot rule change” (BDN, Aug. 12), and applaud Kris Christine of Alna for her perseverance in the matter.

Those who adopted alternative health measures for our pets and ourselves many years ago realize the possible dangers of over-immunization. Authentic health publications in the holistic-alternative practice have warned of the dangers for many years. I’ve learned that it does not only apply to dogs and rabies.

My 15-year-old Persian house cat would have been due for her three-year distemper shot last fall. I had put her on a three-year schedule myself after having had her on a two-year schedule since she was seven years old.

I paid for the expensive test to determine the need before getting the shot. The test revealed still sufficient levels of distemper antibodies in her system after three years. I was glad I did not compromise her immune system with unnecessary vaccines, and especially at her advanced age.

It’s sad when “cash cows” so often are mandated and overrule at the expense of health, which is actually life. Sadly, the situation may well apply to humans, too.
