LITTLE FALLS, N.J. – The Bangor Lumberjacks finished up a weekend sweep of the New Jersey Jackals with the most one-sided victory in franchise history and pulled into another first-place tie with Quebec in the process.
The Lumberjacks laid waste to Jersey late Sunday afternoon with a 22-2 clear-cutting win . On Saturday, Bangor rallied for a 9-8 win. Bangor and Quebec now sit atop the Northeast League North Division second half standings with 27-12 records.
Bangor is now 52-33 overall with seven games left in the regular season.
On Sunday, Derry Hammond hit his 22nd and 23rd home runs -a grand slam in the seventh inning and a three-run shot in the eighth – of the season while going 4-for-6 with four runs scored and nine RBIs. His nine RBI-game breaks the previous league record of seven.
Bangor, which fell four runs short of the league record for one team in a game, sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth and scored six runs and then 10 more in the eighth en route to seven more runs.
Jose Garcia had five hits (a double and four singles), four runs and three RBIs while Shin Uchino had a double, two singles, three runs and one RBI for the Lumberjacks. Jerry Long improved his record to 7-4 with 5 2/3 innings of five-hit ball.
The loss was the worst of the season for the South Division first half champion and second half-leading Jackals, who are now 22-16.
On Saturday, pinch-hitter Shin Uchino singled home Jose Garcia with two outs in the top of the ninth to break the eighth tie of the game and provide the winning margin.
In the bottom of the inning, reliever John Boker flirted with danger as he gave up a one-out double to Scott Goodman and came within a few inches of yielding a home run to Kevin Grijak, whose smash to right was caught by Garcia with Garcia’s back against the wall. After Goodman tagged up and went to third, Boker retired Craig Conway on a groundout to third. Boker (4-0) notched the win with 1 2/3 innings of two-hit, scoreless relief.
Derry Hammond led the way offensively for Bangor with a double, a single, and an RBI. Mark Burke singled twice for one RBI and Garcia also had two singles. Paul Powell hit a two-run double to highlight a four-run eighth that gave Bangor its first lead of the game.
It was feast or famine offensively for New Jersey as seven hitters had two hits apiece for all of the Jackals’ hits.
