Border crosser charged with ID fraud

BANGOR – A man arrested at the Calais border crossing last week was charged Monday in U.S. District Court in Bangor with fraud in connection with identification documents and improper entry by an alien.

Itzhak Ben David, 39, address unknown, is being held without bail. He told immigration officials he was a citizen of Israel and Canada, according to court documents.

David allegedly tried to use a fake Canadian ID card to enter the United States late Thursday, according to court documents.

He was arrested early Friday morning after inspectors with Customs and Border Protection questioned the authenticity of the card because it lacked detail and the crest was blurry.

Customs officials determined that the actual card had been issued to a female immigrant from Poland. David previously had been refused entry at the Toronto airport.

David admitted he had purchased the fake card for $2,000 in Toronto, according to court documents.

If convicted of the charges, David faces up to 18 months in prison and up to $105,000 in fines.
