New bank branch

Machias Savings Bank has purchased space on Outer Hammond Street and plans to open its 11th location – and first branch in Greater Bangor – as early as November.

Regional Vice President James Donnelly said the bank already has built a strong client base in the Bangor area and now would have a location to better accommodate those clients.

The new bank will be located at 1158 Outer Hammond St., which has been empty for two years and at one time housed a Fleet Bank branch. Five jobs will be created at the new branch.

Machias Savings Bank opened its first location in 1869 and now has 11 locations across eastern Maine, including its home office in Machias.

Dog training in Japan

Don Hanson, co-owner of Green Acres Kennel Shop and certified pet dog owner, recently spent two weeks in Japan instructing veterinarians, dog trainers and dog guardians in the use of Bach Flower Essences for treating behavior problems with dogs.

Hanson, who is currently the owner Bach Foundation registered practitioner in North America to have completed the Bach Foundations and Natural Animal Centre’s animal behavior program, was invited by internationally known dog trainer Terry Ryan, who works with several dog training organizations in Japan.

Hanson gave a three-day lecture at the Animal Fancier’s Club in Kurosio-shi and a one-day lecture at the animal shelter in Achi Prefecture. He concluded his speaking tour with a one-day lecture in Tokyo for the Canine Good Citizens Club.

Returning groomer

Shannan Bodwell has moved back to Bangor from Tennessee and once again is grooming at the Green Acres Kennel Shop.

Bodwell is a graduate of the New York School of Grooming. She began her grooming career at Green Acres in 1986. An avid competitor, she has won awards for her grooming each of the four times she has entered a competition.

Pet care certification

Chris Russell, a pet care technician at Green Acres Kennel Shop in Bangor, has earned Level I certification through the American Boarding Kennel Association.

In order to attain this certification, a pet care technician must pass a comprehensive exam which covers breed recognition, small animal anatomy and physiology, boarding care, emergency care and first aid, geriatric and degenerative disease care, contagious disease, parasites, zoonotic diseases, pesticides and customer relations.

Farm Service Agency

The nomination period for the Farm Service Agency county committee elections closes Friday Sept. 3. Farmers are encouraged to obtain a nomination form from the Penobscot County Farm Service Agency office. A form may also be obtained online at: http://forms.sc.cgov.usda.gov/eforms/mainservlet.

Farm Service Agency county committees give local producers a voice in hoe the agency’s programs are administered in the community. The play an important role by making decisions on commodity, conservation and disaster programs. They also provide guidance on other important agricultural issues. Committee members serve three-year terms.

Almost anyone eligible to participate in a Farm Service Agency program and who is of legal voting age may be a candidate for the committee. Individuals may nominate themselves or others.

Voting will take place between Nov. 8 and Dec. 6.

Proclamation of Payroll Week

On Aug. 23, the staff of Advanced Payroll Plus, a subsidiary of Bangor Savings Bank, was awarded a proclamation by Councilor Geoffrey Gratwick on behalf of the Bangor City Council.

The proclamation stated that the citizens and city of Bangor “do hereby recognize the efforts of individuals working in Bangor and of the payroll profession in proclaiming the first full week of September as Payroll Week.”

Advanced Payroll staff accepting the proclamation were Maria Sweetland, Linda Libby, Bonnie Hunnewell, Tess Mairhuber, Mary Meteer, Lynn Hines and Wendy Wiles.

In celebration of the weeklong event Sept. 6-10, APP is planning a food drive with Bangor Savings Bank’s 41 branches throughout Maine, serving as the drop-off sites for nonperishable food items. All items will be delivered to food banks within APP’s service region.

Advanced Payroll Plus employs 28 people in the Bangor and Portland offices.
