BANGOR – The man convicted of breaking into the Penobscot Valley Country Club in 2002 was sentenced Wednesday in Penobscot County Superior Court to four years and three months in prison.

Eugene E. Young Jr., 39, of Corinna was found guilty in June by a Penobscot County jury after a one-day trial.

Young is in the Maine State Prison in Warren serving the remainder of a two-year sentence for operating a vehicle after revocation of his driver’s license. He broke into the country club while on probation for that crime.

The sentence on the burglary will begin when Young completes his previous sentence in October.

Young also was sentenced Wednesday to two years in prison for breaking into a home on Route 2 in Orono and stealing a car on Nov. 30, 2002. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Maine Superior Court Justice Andrew Mead ordered Young to pay $600 restitution to the country club and $50 to the homeowner when he is released from prison.

After breaking into the residence while the homeowners were away, Young rifled through drawers inside the kitchen and left with keys to a pickup truck left outside the home, Orono Detective Sgt. Robert Bryant said when Young was summoned for the crime five days after it occurred.

Young, who had been drinking, drove the pickup truck to the country club, where he smashed a window to gain entry to the golf club’s pro shop. The alarm sounded and he fled, according to police.

He was identified from fingerprints found at both locations on beer cans and prints at both sites that matched his sneakers.

He has previous convictions for burglaries dating back 20 years, according to prosecutors.
