Police thwart potential jumper

BANGOR – A local man threatening Thursday to jump off a downtown building was talked out of it by police after nearly an hour.

For the second time this week, Ryan Rideout of Bangor, who is in his 20s, walked along the roof of 1 Main St., apparently contemplating suicide, according to Bangor police Sgt. Al Hayden.

Rideout was on the roof of the building, which houses the Thai Siam restaurant, for nearly two hours Sunday night, Hayden said.

Just after 6 p.m. Thursday, bystanders in West Market Square watched as Rideout walked along the roof ledge and at times crouched and looked down to the street below.

He gestured aggressively toward police negotiators on the roof, and cut his arms with glass bottles he broke against the roof’s ledge.

Rideout was despondent as the result of a recent breakup and has attempted suicide before, according to Jennifer Cane of Bangor, who said she has known the man for seven years.

“I didn’t think he was going to jump,” Cane said Thursday. “We’ve seen him cut himself at least 50 times.”

Main Street was closed to traffic for nearly an hour while police negotiated with Rideout, who was taken into protective custody and transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center.

The Bangor Fire Department and Bangor Ambulance also responded to the scene.
