BANGOR – A Canadian man arrested at a border patrol checkpoint on Interstate 95 appeared Friday in federal court on marijuana possession charges.
Joshua D. Gabriel, 29, of Ontario was arrested Wednesday in Old Town at a checkpoint set up by U.S. Customs & Border Protection, a division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, after border patrol agents allegedly found 140 pounds of marijuana in his car, according to court documents.
A detention hearing was scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in U.S. District Court in Bangor.
Gabriel is being held at the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor.
Border patrol agents have been running random checkpoints this summer at the weigh station on I-95 near mile marker 200.
Gabriel, who was driving a blue Chrysler minivan registered in New Jersey, was stopped about 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, according to court documents. He allegedly told agents he had been in Presque Isle “checking out the school.”
After Gabriel allegedly gave permission for the agents to look in his luggage, they found numerous vacuum-sealed bags containing a green leafy substance that tested positive for the presence of marijuana, according to court documents.
If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million and could be forbidden from entering the United States again.
