Lynx roll by Tigers 39-6 Offensive line sparks Mattanawcook

LINCOLN – Duncan Markie gained 98 yards on 16 carries and rushed for both a touchdown and a two-point conversion to help lead the Mattanawcook Academy Lynx to a 39-6 opening win over the Dexter Tigers in high school football action Friday night.

Quarterback Dylan Hanscom ran the ball four times for one TD and 51 yards and completed six of seven passes for a TD, 64 yards and no interceptions. MacKenzie Haines gained 69 yards on eight carries. Isaac Young had four catches for a TD and 45 yards while Shey Gardiner led the team with nine tackles (six unassisted).

Mattanawcook’s offensive line of center Andrew Zagorianakos, tackles Ross Clapp and Nathan Brown, and guards Matt Morin and Justin Bard paved the way for a 316-yard rushing effort by the backs and allowed just one sack.

Billy Greene scored Dexter’s lone touchdown with a two-yard run in the second quarter.

At Dover-Foxcroft, Bobby Gilbert ran for three touchdowns, including an 82- and 83-yarder to power the defending state champions to the opening win.

Gilbert had five carries, for a total of 217 yards and had another 40-yard touchdown. Andrew Pomeroy chipped in with 36 yards on six carries and also had a 2-yard touchdown run. Brad Bellemare added an 8- yard touchdown run, Scott McKusick rushed in from 14 yards and Shayne Adkins scored from 35 yards out.

James McPhee made seven tackles for Foxcroft.

Wes Gagne finished with 27 yards on nine carries to lead the Huskies of Pittsfield.

At Belfast, Josh Aldus rolled up 160 yards on 24 carries and scoreed on touchdown runs of 12 and 18 yards to carry the defending Class B state champs to victory.

Garren Horne also had 90-yard and 5-yard touchdown runs for the winners and finished with 135 yards on eight carries.

Andy Whalen completed five of seven passes for 61 yards and had a 2-yard touchdown run.

Frank Janelle had 12 carries for 61 yards for Oak Hill. Gabe Fontaine had a 1-yard touchdown run.

At Mount Desert, brothers Ryan Lindie and Justin Lindie each scored on two touchdown runs in the first half – Ryan on a 45-yar run and a 55-yard punt return – and the Black Raiders rolled up more than 300 yards on the ground against Mount Desert Island.

Ben Poulin was 5-for-5 on PAT kicks while John Goulette ran for a 40-yard touchdown and rushed for a two-point conversion.

Patrick Murphy led the Trojans with 69 yards on 25 carries.

At Madison, Woody Noyes ran for a touchdown and 82 yards on nine carries to lead the Madison Bulldogs to victory over Traip Academy.

Noyes also gained 94 yards on three punt returns and had a 60-yard touchdown return called back on a clipping penalty. Tim Fortin had a touchdown and 49 yards on 11 carries and brother Tony led the defense with eight solo tackles and 10 assists.

At Rockland, Andrew Weiss and John Coppola combined to complete 14 of 28 passes for 291 yards and five touchdowns to lead Rockland to victory.

Wade Oliver caught eight passes for 149 yards for Rockland. Dan Curtis had eight tackles and Josh Fogg added seven tackles.

Matt Wark ran for 147 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown in the second quarter for Stearns of Millinocket.

Deering opens with win

State Class A defending champion Deering of Portland picked up where it left off last season with an opening 36-6 victory over the South Portland Red Riots Friday night.

It was a busy opening night as schools opened across the state.
