BREWER – Earlier this week Old Town football coach Dan Baker introduced his Indians to a new defensive alignment.

The Indians haven’t had much time to work on the new five-man front after a switch from the old ’40’ (4-0). And with Brewer’s option offense clicking, there wasn’t much Old Town could do.

Kevin McAvoy racked up four touchdowns and led a troop of eight Brewer rushers with at least 15 yards each as the Witches rolled to a 48-0 victory over the Indians in Friday night’s Pine Tree Conference Class B opener at Doyle Field.

Brewer finished with 321 yards on 50 carries thanks in part to quarterback Ricky Porter’s command of the option offense.

“We depend on him to get us to the open grass and he’s doing a real good job,” said Brewer coach Ed Ortego. “He’s just like a point guard. He’s finding the space and reading the reads.”

It helped the Witches score in their first drive. Porter rushed three times for 22 yards in the drive, handed off to Matt Littlefield for 16 yards and McAvoy for another 17-yard run, and then McAvoy scored on a pitch from Porter.

“The defense just crashed inside,” said McAvoy, who was wearing plenty of padding on his broken right hand. “We’ve got the speed this year and that’s what we took advantage of.”

The Indians went 3-and-out on their first drive and got the ball back after Jake Thompson recovered a Brewer fumble. Old Town lost the ball on downs again and two plays later McAvoy scored on a 23-yard counter.

“We get him on that counter to the split-end side, he runs that and we get him in a position when he can read an inside cut or an outside break,” Ortego said. “He was in a position to read it.”

Littlefield rushed for the two-point conversion, making up for Brewer’s missed kick after McAvoy’s first score, to make it 14-0.

Ben Caldwell added a two-yard TD run in Brewer’s first drive of the second quarter. Porter scored on a 12-yard run late in the second, and Brewer’s Ricky Study set up the Witches’ final scoring drive of the quarter when he intercepted an Old Town pass.

The Witches were at their most effective on the ground. Porter and Zack Wilson each ran for 60 yards, Ricky Adams had 33 yards and Littlefield finished with 31.

“Nobody was doing anything,” Baker said. “When one position was doing something right the other wasn’t. We just need more time to piece things together. We’ve got some guys up front who are hard to move and [the 50] is a new scheme for our defensive ends and inside linebackers.”

Brewer senior lineman Chad Szylvain said the Witches weren’t sure what to expect from Old Town’s defense.

“We practice for both a four-front and a five-front,” he said. “Basically we just wanted to execute on both sides of the ball.”

Brad Perry led Old Town with 73 yards on 20 carries. Ortego said the Witches were expecting the Indians to go to their tight ends early, so Perry’s runs out of Old Town’s power-I formation caught Brewer’s defense a bit off guard.

“We adjusted eventually by changing where the linemen were but [Old Town] took advantage of our game plan real well,” he said.

Baker said he’s hopeful the Indians will come together once the defense gains its footing.

“We can move the ball. We just need our defense to be able to chew some clock,” Baker said. “As long as we stay in this together and take it week by week we’ll be fine.”
