WINTERPORT – A Northport woman injured in a head-on collision on Route 1A last Friday has died.

Waldo County Chief Deputy Bob Keating said Edna Staples, 70, died from her injuries on Wednesday.

Staples had been at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor since the crash, Keating said Friday. Two other women involved in the crash also were injured.

The accident occurred at 12:46 p.m. Aug. 27. Staples was driving a 1994 Ford Taurus in the northbound lane near the intersection of Johnson Lane and Route 1A when her vehicle veered into the southbound lane and struck a 2002 GMC pickup driven by Shirley Rogers, 40, of Belfast.

Riding with Rogers was her daughter, Sara McIntyre, 18, of Belfast.

“The cars pretty much struck head-on,” Deputy Merl Reed reported after the accident.

Rogers broke her leg in the crash, and McIntyre suffered lacerations to her arms and a foot.

Reed was unsure whether Staples was wearing a seat belt, but her vehicle’s air bag deployed. Rogers and McIntyre were not wearing seat belts, but their air bags also deployed.
